On Tuesday, April 25, at about 8 pm, I had a huge surprise: It was announced that my newest book, Dorie’s Cookies, won a James Beard Foundation Award. It’s a big deal! Such a big deal that I cried as soon as I got to the stage.
As always, the crop of cookbooks included so many wonderful books by so many authors I admire tremendously. Being nominated this year seemed like a particularly special honor because I loved the two other books in the Baking and Desserts category: The Art of the Pie, by Kate McDermott, and Breaking Breads, by Uri Scheft and Raquel Pelzel. When my name was called, I was so surprised that I couldn’t get up from my seat immediately and then, when I got to the stage – after I cried – I was there empty-handed: I hadn’t prepared any acceptance notes because I didn’t think I’d need them.
Here’s the list of all the books, publications and media that won this week. And, in case you haven’t heard the wonderful news, Ronni Lundy’s truly exceptional book, Victuals, won Cookbook of the Year!
Thank you to everyone who helped make my book read right, look good and work. And thank you to all of you for being such good cookies – xoDorie
